Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is rooted in trust, respect, and fostering an open-minded space where students feel comfortable and confident. I believe in the principle, “give respect, get respect,” which helps create a safe and inclusive environment in the art room.
Central to my approach is a holistic view of education, influenced by Freud’s exploration of the unconscious mind and the role of self-expression in personal growth. Freud emphasized that art can serve as a pathway to understanding inner emotions and unconscious desires. In the art room, this perspective informs my belief in the value of self-discovery through creative processes. By encouraging students to explore their thoughts and emotions in a judgment-free environment, I help them uncover deeper aspects of their identity and experiences.
Art offers students a powerful outlet for expressing what words may not suffice to convey. Sketchbooks, for instance, become a safe space for them to experiment, embrace mistakes, and tell their unique stories. This process not only nurtures their artistic skills but also builds emotional resilience and confidence. Freud’s ideas remind us that such self-expression is vital for personal development and mental well-being.
I aim to help students connect personally with their work, as passion and self-expression deepen learning. Beyond creating visually pleasing pieces, I encourage them to tell stories, challenge perspectives, and step outside their comfort zones. Art, for me, is a medium for life skills—resilience, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Through this process, students can confront and make sense of their inner worlds, translating complex feelings into meaningful creations.
In summary, my philosophy prioritizes trust and respect, fostering creativity and personal growth. By empowering students to explore, take risks, and find meaning in their work, I hope to nurture skills and perspectives that extend beyond the art room. Guided by Freud’s belief in the transformative power of self-expression, I strive to create an environment where students feel seen, valued, and free to discover their full potential.
