Units Of Learning
Discover the creative Units of Learning, where art takes many forms! Explore mural art, printmaking, sculpture, textile, and clay making. Each unit offers timelines, learning goals, and assessments, fostering student creativity and growth.
Geometric 3D Sculpture UoL
In this project, students will create a ceramic sculpture inspired by the exterior buildings of their school and town, envisioning a new architectural form. Using the slab technique, they will craft sculptures up to 15 cm in height and width, which will be fired, painted with colored glaze, and finished with a transparent glaze before a final firing. Students will analyze the works of artists David Umemoto and Grace Brown, discussing their techniques and recording insights in their sketchbooks. To inform their designs, they will create collages from photographs of selected buildings, translating these inspirations into their unique ceramic sculptures.
Interior Archiecture of School Lino Print UoL
Students will create an A5 lino print inspired by the interior architecture of their school, focusing on a photographed feature they select and edit into black and white. The print will use two colors, black and blue, with white highlights and be completed on card paper to form part of a collective display. Students will analyze the works of artists such as Sir Sidney Nolan and George Tappert in their sketchbooks, exploring techniques like mark-making, repeated patterns, and black outlines to inform their designs. After sketching their ideas, they will develop a final print that reflects their creative interpretation of the chosen architectural detail.
Textile Mural
Students will work in groups of four to collaboratively design and create a textile mural that narrates Killarney’s historical and social evolution, focusing on its architectural heritage and societal transformation. Drawing inspiration from artists like Lowry, Seán Keating, Joe Caslin, and Brian Palm, they will research the impact of industrial, social, and economic shifts. Groups will explore themes like urban migration and modern retail developments while studying old and derelict buildings to encourage meaningful discussions on community change. Using textile materials and curated resources, each group’s mural will represent Killarney’s resilience and dynamic identity over time.
